I think this is how I want the user system to work. I think something akin to how https://lobste.rs works is a good tradeoff:

Any user can generate invite codes (maybe do cap them though?)
You can only sign up with an invite code
The invited user is permanently associated with the user who invited them
That way, you can render a "tree" to show who invited who
